ESPCI Paris PSL

ESPCI Paris PSL is a major institution of higher education (a French "Grande École d’ingénieurs"), an internationally renowned research center (6 Nobel Prizes), and a fertile ground for innovation, with several start-ups founded each year. ESPCI is a highly multidisciplinary environment with teaching and research in physics, chemistry and biology.

Diagnostic project

Most diagnostic tests cannot be performed directly in a point of care setting but require the transferring samples to a specialized laboratory. This limits the speed at which possibly life-saving diagnoses are performed and creates an unnecessary bottleneck in the healthcare system.
The aim of our project is to miniaturize and automatize diagnostic tests which are based on the analysis of heterogeneous biological samples. Due to their complexity, such samples are hard to characterize via bulk methods, that only capture their average properties. This is why this project relies on the extraordinary resolving power of single-molecule techniques, which characterize heterogenous samples in full detail.
The project is developed in collaboration with 4Catalyzer, a start-up incubator founded by Dr. Jonathan Rothberg, the pioneer of next-generation sequencing. Together, we want make this type of tests, quick, easy and reliable, as to be performed directly in a point-of-care setting, making this type of next-generation diagnostics available to everyone around the world.

Requirements

We are seeking a highly motivated engineer to work on the development of single-molecule methods for diagnostics. Requirements are experience in molecular biology, single-molecule fluorescence, nucleic acid chemistry or related fields, with expertise in single-molecule imaging (TIRF) highly desirable. Flexibility, autonomy, the ability to work in a highly multidisciplinary team and good interpersonal skills are essential.
