The ESPCI Paris - PSL Ingénieur degree

The Ingénieur degree awarded in France may be unfamiliar in other countries, where the international standard is the Doctor of Science degree. In offering a four-year curriculum that combines theory and practice, ESPCI Paris- PSL naturally prepares graduates to pursue doctoral studies leading to a PhD, in a broad range of topics from Chemistry, Physics and Biology and in between.

Approach to education

Students participate actively in the learning process, through:

  • laboratory work (typically in two-person teams)
  • tutorial work, which was introduced by Pierre-Gilles de Gennes: students work in groups of four on a topic proposed by a teacher/researcher; the topic must be based on actual research work and go beyond the related classroom lectures.

Student-faculty relations

The limited size of each graduating class (85 students) and the presence of teachers who conduct their research work on-campus foster rewarding informal contact with faculty.

Faculty

Virtually all the teaching in classrooms and laboratories is provided by the faculty of approximately seventy ESPCI Paris professors and lecturers.
Some twenty outside instructors teach in other areas, particularly languages, business and economics.

The tutorial system draws on the expertise of one hundred additional researchers from laboratories on the campus or nearby.
